The Boxer is an amazing breed with an amazing personality,
but they are not for everyone. Please take a few minutes to read
if you and your family are right for a Boxer.
Need a Laugh?
Although Boxers are workers they are also clowns. In fact, it’s
a staple of the Boxers personality. This is a trait that most
Boxer owners love, but it can frustrate some people and you must
decide if this is something you can enjoy.
Looking for a House dog?
Boxers do not tolerate extreme heat or extreme cold. Boxers are
house dogs plain and simple. Many people who are attracted to
dogs the size of Boxers and up usually think of them as outside
dogs. If this is your thinking, PLEASE look at a different breed.
Need a Guard Dog?
Many Boxers end up being abandoned because they are often sought
to be a guard dog. Although Boxers are very capable of protecting
their family, the breed is not aggressive by nature. Unfortunately
many bad owners have tried and failed to train them to be aggressive.
This most always leads to them being abandoned. Boxers, and all
dogs, should be a member of the family not an employee.
How active are you and your family?
Boxers are very intelligent and active so they need a good amount
of mental and physical exercise. Being a larger breed they are
not able to get all their energy out indoors. You must have time
to walk and play every day. The Boxer also needs mental stimulation
through training and learning new things. A bored Boxer will usually
become a mischievious Boxer.
Have Kids around?
If you have children then Boxers are a perfect breed. However,
you must have each member of the family be willing to make the
effort to consistently train your Boxer to be a great family pet.
All Boxers I have owned and been around have played gently with
young children. They are extremely tolerant and kind. Like any
breed of dog, they must be raised and trained to behave properly.
How big is your lap?
Boxers are very affectionate and need constant interaction from
their people. If you prefer a dog that is independent dog, then
you are looking in the wrong place. The Boxer will follow you
from room to room and cannot stand it when it is not by your side.
Our Boxers sit on the couch and watch TV with us, sleep in our
room, ride in the car, etc. They are devastated to be excluded
from anything. And yes, sometimes they just MUST sit on your lap!
Unconditional Love, do you have it?
One of the most amazing things about dogs, all breeds, is that
they are capable of giving unconditional love to their owners.
You must be willing to give the same back in return; after all,
this is what every dog really wants.
No matter what type of dog you own, please
be a responsible parent to them!
